Accident Frequency and Insurance Claim Severity on the Rise

Commercial trucking represented 71% of tonnage carried by all modes of U.S. domestic freight transportation in 2017. With more trucks on the road, there were also more accidents, including a rise in fatalities.

According to the American Trucking Association:

  • Trucks were involved in 59% more accidents per mile than in 2010, despite new technologies and best efforts of regulators.
  • The number of people who died in large truck crashes was 48% higher than in 2009.

  • Per estimates by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, in 2018 the average cost for large-truck accidents was about $120,000, while crashes involving tractor-trailers averaged $382,000.
  • When fatalities were involved, the average cost rose to $4.8 million.

Three Deployment Methods

MANUAL ACTIVATION

When a driver is shouldered or disabled along the roadway, one push of the H.E.L.P. DeliverSAFE™ button:

  • Immediately activates digital alerts and emergency lighting
  • Greatly enhances safety of the driver and oncoming drivers/vehicles

SEMI-AUTOMATIC DEPLOYMENT

DeliverSAFE™ can also be deployed semi-automatically when switched on:

  • When vehicle slows, regular hazard lights are displayed
  • When vehicle stops, lighting automatically changes to faster flash rate, and digital signal is deployed as an additional alert/warning to oncoming traffic

AUTO DEPLOYMENT

VOXX is working with truck OEMs to incorporate H.E.L.P. DeliverSAFE™ into new-build trucks to deploy automatically upon:

  • Collision or airbag sensor
  • Rollover, tire blowout, driveline failure
  • Autonomous Driving System "safe stop"

Safety for the Connected Commercial Vehicle

When H.E.L.P. DeliverSAFE’s Emergency Mode is activated, alerts and notifications are automatically communicated to oncoming drivers through connections with traffic data and OEM cloud providers. In certain events, such as an airbag deployment, emergency responder channels are also notified with the information they need to respond efficiently.
