MAINTENANCE
TIPS
A products life span can be greatly extended by following some
very simple methods to insure correct operation and function. The following maintenance suggestions will help
in extending the life of your lighting system.
- The
correct operating voltage is very critical for obtaining longer lamp life. Higher then recommend voltage makes
for a bright display of lights, however this condition could yield to quick lamp failure, based on the fact of
the lamp is being over driven. Over driving your lighting system by 1 volt could decrease the lamps life span
by 50%.
- Low
Voltage or Under Voltage condition is often caused by poor connections or ground termination. The main cause of
this condition is corrosion of the terminals and or bad grounding points. Make sure all connections are clean
and packed with nonconductive grease.
- Ground
connections are critical in a vehicles lighting system especially when the trailer is used for the ground as a
whole. When making these ground connection make sure the grounding surface area is a clean connection – Metal
to Metal. Ground straps also help in securing a good grounding point between the tractor and
trailer.
- Keep
your lamps cool; heat is a big factor in early failure of lamps as well. All lamps incondesant or LED will last
longer if they can dissipate the heat they produce. Review the mounting locations of the lamps making sure they
aren’t around any heat producing parts such as exhaust system components. Make sure the lamps have plenty of
air space for heat transfer. Also, keeping the lamp lens clean and free of dirt helps in contributing to a
lower operating temperature.
- Keeping your lamps clean and free of highway dirt and dust is the best way to insure a long
lifetime of use. However some cleaning agents have a negative effect on polycarbonate lamp housings. Not all
household cleaners are safe to use on polycarbonate devises, so please review your cleaning agents carefully
before use.
- Using Nonconductive grease (Non Carbon Based Grease) on all
electrical plugs, terminals, junction boxes and circuit switches help to avoid any corrosive situations.
Once a year all plugs and fitting should be reviewed and new electrical grease should be placed on the
connections and plugs. By doing this you’re able to block out any corrosive elements that would harm your
electrical connections.
